A New Summer Reading Program

By Rachel Ives, Publisher Macaroni Kid Bridgewater-Brockton June 27, 2017

Do you struggle to get your child to do their summer reading? I have a feeling I’m going to have quite the battle this year. I heard about a new program that is being held by the Animal Protection Center of Southeastern Massachusetts in Brockton and I could not be more excited to sign my daughter up and share the information with all of you!

Each Saturday in July (starting on the 8th) the APCSM is hosting Pages with Pets. Each week this unique program will feature a different type of animal that the shelter takes in. It will start at 10:30 AM with a short educational component to teach the children about the animal; (what it takes to care for it, what it eats, how to hold it…etc.). Children will then be separated into small groups where the animals will join them for some interaction and for the children to practice reading! Books are being provided by the Holbrook and Whitman Public Libraries and will be selected by the librarians to complement the animal of the week.

Schedule: (hours are 10:30 AM – 12:00 PM each week)
July 8: Meet the Kitties
July 15: Meet the Guinea Pigs
July 22: Meet the Bunnies
July 29: Meet the Dogs (these will not be shelter dogs but certified reading dogs)

How awesome is this? Animal loving kids are going to be so excited to interact with the animals that they won’t even have time to resist doing their summer reading. If you are as enthusiastic as I am about this program, you can register HERE. There are only 30 spots each week and you must register to attend. You can register for 1 week, or all 4! Children do need to be between 7 and 12 years old and this is not a drop off program. The program is free but the shelter does request 1 donation per family for the shelter (think a small bag of food, linens, kitty litter…etc.).
