National Adopt a Shelter Pet Day - April 30th

National Adopt a Shelter Pet Day is on Sunday, April 30th. If you have been considering adding to your family by way of a pet, please consider adoption! My family could not be happier with our rescue dog, she truly has been the perfect addition to our family. There are many options to consider when adding a pet to your family. Purchasing from a breeder or a pet store are very common options but according to the Humane Society, here are the top reasons to adopt instead.

#1 You’ll save a life. Nearly 3 million pets are living in shelters where they will be euthanized simply due to overpopulation

#2 You’ll save money. Adoption fees are generally much less than breeders and pet stores and the fees go to future rescues and caring for the animals left in the shelter. Your new family member will also come home vaccinated, spayed/neutered and micro-chipped.

#3 You’ll get a great pet. I can attest to this, our dog, Missy, is gentle and loving, playful and obedient.

Those are three reasons from the Humane Society. Here are a few from me:

#1 Shelter dogs are generally housebroken and beyond the chewing and nipping phase that puppies go through. As a mom with a full time job, it was a great relief to get a dog that didn’t need this basic training.

#2 If you are looking for a puppy, there are shelter-less rescues that have puppies almost all the time. Many of them rescue pregnant dogs that are left on the side of the road down south, and then have to adopt out the puppies.

#3 You’ll save more than just a life. You’ll save many lives. By adopting you’re opening up a spot for another rescued animal to come in to the shelter for a chance at a new life.

#4 Shelters go the extra mile to make sure that whoever is adopting is fit to do so. They want to make sure their animals are going to caring homes where they can live fur-ever and not end up back in the shelter.

Rescuing was one of the best decisions I have ever made and I highly recommend anyone looking to add to their family at least does some homework to see if it could be the right decision for them too. Please contact the Animal Protection Center of Southeastern Massachusetts located in Brockton for more information about adopting. They have birds, cats, dogs and rabbits all available for adoption now. They also have special events and volunteer opportunities.

About the APCSM

The Animal Protection Center of Southeastern Massachusetts is a new non-profit organization that has formed to continue to serve the animals and people of the community. As you may have heard, the MSPCA's Metro-South Animal Care & Adoption Center is scheduled to close at the end of September, however the Animal Protection Center of Southeastern Massachusetts is working closely with and has received endorsement from the MSPCA to continue animal sheltering in the area.

Our shelter is located on the Easton / Brockton line in the building formerly housing the MSPCA.

The Mission of the APCSM is to operate an open admission animal care and adoption facility, with focus on prevention of cruelty to animals, education and outreach, low-cost spay/neuter programs and helping animals and people in the community.
